Venture Literary Sells Harvard-Yale Football Rivalry Book to Crown

On October 25, 2002, Frank R. Scatoni of Venture Literary, representing Bernard M. Corbett and Paul A. Simpson, sold the World rights to The Only Game That Matters: A Season Inside Harvard vs. Yale, to Pete Fornatale at Crown.

No rivalry has spawned more passion than "The Game." Dating back to 1883, the Harvard-Yale November classic has been a national event that has captured the American public’s imagination. In The Only Game That Matters veteran sportswriter and broadcaster Bernard M. Corbett, along with journalist Paul A. Simpson, examines The Game from its soccer-rugby origins all the way through the 2002 season, the 119th renewal of the autumn ritual. Corbett and Simpson discuss the history of The Game in the context of complex social and political issues, the evolution of the sport of football, the tradition and heritage of the Ivy League, and how the Harvard-Yale rivalry has transcended the world of sport to become enmeshed in everyday life.
Pulitzer Prize-winner David Halberstam called The Game "wonderful theater, participatory theater," and had this to say about the yearly event: "It helped cement my participation in something rare then, and rarer still today in America, a community to which I belonged and still belong." Without the Harvard-Yale rivalry, which began 119 years ago, football as we currently know it may not even exist. To the sport of football, to the spirit of rivalry, and to the Crimson and Yale faithful, the annual game between Harvard and Yale is the only game that matters.
